Plot

Fourteen years after the original Cocktail became a touchstone for a generation of young Indians, Homi Adajania returns with a spiritual sequel that keeps the cocktail and changes the drinkers. Cocktail 2 stars Shahid Kapoor as Kunal, Rashmika Mandanna as Diya and Kriti Sanon as Ally — three friends whose easy, sunlit friendship turns complicated when love and friendship start sharing the same glass. The film travels from Delhi to Sicily and back, and its glossy locations are part of the point.

Kunal and Diya are a couple whose long relationship is shaken when Ally, an old friend, re-enters their lives. What begins as a plan between two women spirals into jealousy, honesty and a series of emotional collisions that force all three to decide what they actually want from each other. The film is less interested in who ends up with whom than in how friendship survives when romance gets in the way — a question the original asked too, with a different answer.

Performance

Shahid Kapoor is the film’s steadiest asset. As Kunal, he plays a man who is charming without being a rake and confused without being a fool, and his comic timing in the lighter scenes carries the first half. Kriti Sanon, as the bold and carefree Ally, brings the film’s most unpredictable energy — she is funny, frank and a little dangerous to the story’s comfort, which is exactly what the role needs.

Rashmika Mandanna’s Diya is the emotional centre, and she plays the slow realisation that a decade-long relationship can still surprise you with real feeling. The three leads have genuine chemistry, and their scenes together — arguing, dancing, apologising — are the film’s best moments. When the script lets them simply talk, the film feels alive; when it forces them into melodrama, even their charm cannot quite save it.

Screenplay and Direction

Homi Adajania directs with the same breezy, music-video confidence he brought to the original, and the screenplay by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain leans into modern relationship language — situationships, boundaries, the blur between friendship and love. The film looks expensive in the best way: Sicily, Delhi and Gurugram are shot like postcards, and the editing keeps the mood light even when the story turns serious.

The film’s weakness is that it borrows the original’s framework without quite earning its emotional depth. The love triangle is stylish but underdeveloped, and the second half leans on melodrama where the first half promised wit. Critics were divided for exactly that reason: some praised the gloss and the chemistry, others found the story hollow. Both camps are partly right — this is a beautiful film about a messy subject that sometimes prefers beauty to mess.

Music

Pritam’s music is the film’s strongest argument for itself. The soundtrack, released just after the film, carries the Maddock tradition of music-driven storytelling: Jab Talak, the first single, sets the breezy tone, while Tujhko, sung by Arijit Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan, is the film’s emotional anchor. Mashooqa brings an Italian flavour that fits the Sicily setting, and the reworked Bandhu 2.0 is a deliberate nostalgia play for fans of the original.

The songs are not interruptions; they are how the characters say what they cannot say in dialogue. Pritam, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, understands that a romantic drama lives or dies on whether the audience hums its songs afterwards, and this soundtrack passes that test. It is the rare sequel score that honours its predecessor without copying it.

Themes

Cocktail 2 is a film about the oldest question in the genre — can a man and a woman be just friends? — updated for a generation that answers it differently. The original’s answer was wrapped in tragedy; this film’s answer is messier and more hopeful, suggesting that friendship and love are not opposites but neighbours who keep borrowing each other’s keys. The film’s tagline, from friends to lovers to chaos, is honest about the chaos.

It also asks whether a decade-long relationship can survive a new person, and answers that survival depends less on loyalty than on honesty. That is a more adult question than the film sometimes admits, but it is the question that keeps the story interesting even when the plot wobbles.

Conclusion

Cocktail 2 became one of the summer’s most talked-about Hindi releases, with its trailer topping YouTube’s movie charts for a week and its music outliving its reviews. Released on 19 June 2026 and streaming on Netflix from August, it is a glossy, star-driven romance that mostly delivers what its trailer promised.

It is not the equal of the original, and it does not need to be. For viewers who want a stylish, musical, emotionally messy love triangle with three stars at the top of their charm, this is an easy, enjoyable watch — best seen with friends, and best argued about afterwards.
