Plot

Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan made some of Hindi cinema’s most beloved comedies together — Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhool Bhulaiyaa — and Bhooth Bangla is their reunion after more than a decade. The horror-comedy follows Arjun Acharya, played by Kumar, who inherits a decaying ancestral palace in the village of Mangalpur and decides to host his sister’s destination wedding there, despite every local warning that no wedding ever happens in that village.

The warnings concern Vadhusur, a demon said to abduct newlywed brides, and a thousand-year-old curse tied to the palace itself. As Arjun prepares the wedding, strange things begin happening in the mansion, and a writer named Priya — whose own sister is among the missing brides — starts digging into the palace’s past. The film mixes village superstition, black magic and family secrets with the broad slapstick the director-actor pair are famous for.

Performance

Akshay Kumar is in his comfort zone as Arjun, and that comfort is the film’s engine. He plays the sceptical city man who refuses to believe in ghosts until the ghosts refuse to be ignored, and his comic timing with Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav — both back in classic Priyadarshan mode — carries the film’s funniest stretches. Rawal, as ever, can make a single line reading feel like a set piece.

Tabu brings gravity to a film that could easily float away, and Wamiqa Gabbi is a lively presence as the film’s emotional counterweight. The late Asrani appears in one of his final screen roles, and his scenes carry a poignancy the film does not underline — it does not need to. Mithila Palkar, as Arjun’s sister, and Jisshu Sengupta round out an ensemble that understands exactly what kind of film this is.

Screenplay and Direction

Priyadarshan directs in his classic mode: a large house, a large cast, misunderstandings piling on misunderstandings, and a mystery that is revealed in layers. The screenplay, by Priyadarshan, Rohan Shankar and Abilash Nair from Aakash Kaushik’s story, keeps the horror and the comedy in separate rooms for much of the film, which lets each work on its own terms. Divakar Mani’s cinematography leans into old-school horror textures — shadows, corridors, candlelight — that make the palace feel like a character.

The film’s weakness is tone. Priyadarshan himself has said this is a fantasy, not a psychological thriller like Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and viewers expecting scares may find the comedy softening them, while viewers expecting pure comedy may find the horror slowing the jokes. Critics were divided on exactly that balance. Yet the film’s confidence in its own odd mixture is part of its charm, and its family audience embraced it.

Music

Pritam’s music is built for a horror-comedy that wants to be hummed afterwards. Songs like Ram Ji Aake Bhala Karenge, Tu Hi Disda and O Ri O Sanwariya mix devotional colour with romantic melody, and they are staged with the colour and scale the genre demands. The soundtrack does not try to be scary; it tries to be memorable, and it mostly succeeds.

The background score does the horror work, using silence and sudden sound to sell the palace’s scares without relying on jump cuts alone. It is a traditional approach, and it suits a film that is itself a throwback. The music will not surprise anyone who knows Pritam’s work, but it will please most of them.

Themes

Bhooth Bangla is a film about what families inherit — not just palaces, but curses, secrets and debts. Arjun inherits a house he did not ask for and a history he did not know, and the film suggests that ignoring the past does not make it go away; it makes it louder. The wedding at the centre of the story is the perfect device for that theme: a celebration that forces a family to face what it has buried.

It is also, more simply, a film about fear as entertainment. The villagers’ superstitions, the demon’s legend, the haunted mansion — all of it is played with a wink, inviting the audience to be scared and to laugh at being scared in the same breath. That double feeling is the whole pleasure of the horror-comedy, and this film understands it.

Conclusion

Bhooth Bangla became a commercial success, collecting around ₹200 crore and more by most trade estimates, and its Netflix premiere on 12 June 2026 brought it to an even wider family audience. Released in theatres on 17 April 2026, it proved that the Akshay-Priyadarshan pairing still has box-office magic.

It is not the duo’s best film, and its tone will divide viewers, but it is a warm, funny, spooky throwback that knows its audience. For a weekend watch with the family, it is an easy recommendation — just do not plan a destination wedding in a palace with a curse.
