Plot

Common Man is a political drama about an ordinary person who refuses to stay ordinary when power turns against the people around him. Gowrishankar SRG plays Kumar Kamsale, a man whose life is defined not by ambition but by a stubborn sense of what is right, and the film follows him as that stubbornness puts him in the path of politicians and fixers who are used to getting their way.

The story is made as a Kannada-Hindi bilingual, and its politics are deliberately close to the ground: land, local influence, and the small corruptions that decide whether an ordinary family gets justice. Kumar’s fight is not for a throne but for dignity, and the film builds its tension from the gap between how the system treats a common man and how a common man answers back.

The film’s strength lies in how ordinary its injustices feel. Kumar does not face a single grand villain so much as a system of small pressures: a file that will not move, a favour that is expected, a threat delivered politely. By keeping the corruption close to daily life, the film makes Kumar’s stand feel like something any viewer might one day have to make, and that recognition is what keeps the audience on his side.

Performance

Gowrishankar SRG carries the film with a performance that leans on conviction rather than star swagger. Kumar Kamsale is written as a man of principle, and Gowrishankar plays him without softening his edges: he is patient until patience stops working, and the moments when that patience breaks are the film’s most effective scenes.

Shona Ladwa gives the film its emotional anchor, and Sabby Suri, N. Narasimha Murthy and Ramesh Bhat round out a supporting cast of familiar faces who understand the world of local politics the film is portraying. The ensemble keeps the drama grounded, which is exactly what a political film about an ordinary man needs.

Screenplay and Direction

Director Om Sai Prakash, making his 106th film, directs with the confidence of a filmmaker who knows this territory well. The screenplay follows a classic arc, an honest man pushed until he pushes back, but it fills that arc with the details of local power: the middlemen, the threats, the quiet deals, and the cost of saying no.

The direction favours clarity over flash, letting the confrontations play out in dialogue and in the slow build of pressure on Kumar and his family. It is an old-fashioned approach, and it suits a film whose hero is old-fashioned too. The bilingual making of the film also widens its reach, though its heart stays firmly in Karnataka’s political landscape.

The screenplay also gives Kumar’s family a real presence in the story, rather than using them only as motivation. His wife and his neighbours feel the consequences of his honesty, and their fear and support in turn shape his decisions. That domestic grounding is what separates a political drama from a pamphlet, and Om Sai Prakash’s experience shows in how naturally those scenes play.

Music

Vinay Chandra composes the music, and the score supports the film’s serious tone without turning it into a lecture. The songs give Kumar’s personal life its warmth, balancing the harder political scenes with moments of family and feeling.

The background music is used sparingly, rising mainly in the confrontations where Kumar’s resolve is tested. It is functional, honest film music: it does not try to steal scenes, and it keeps the audience’s attention on the argument the film is making rather than on the soundtrack.

Themes

The theme of Common Man is in its title: what is the worth of one ordinary person against a system built to ignore him? The film argues that a common man’s strength is not in power but in refusal, the refusal to accept an injustice quietly, to take a bribe, to look away when a neighbour is wronged.

It also looks at the price of that refusal. Kumar’s stand costs his family peace and safety, and the film does not pretend otherwise. That honesty about consequences is what lifts it above a simple hero-versus-villain story: the film knows that standing up is easy to applaud and hard to live with.

Another thread worth noting is the film’s view of patience. Kumar is not a man who enjoys confrontation; he tries reason, procedure and quiet persistence first, and only turns to open defiance when those paths are closed. The film suggests that patience is not weakness, but that a system which mistakes patience for surrender will eventually meet the resistance it created.

Conclusion

Common Man is a sincere political drama in the classic mould, carried by Gowrishankar SRG’s committed performance and Om Sai Prakash’s experienced direction. It will speak most directly to viewers who like their cinema with a social conscience.

For an evening of straightforward, principled drama, it is worth a theatrical watch. Go for the story of an ordinary man who decides that dignity is not negotiable, and stay for a reminder of why such stories still matter.
