Vakeel Saab is a Telugu legal drama directed by Venu Sriram, starring Pawan Kalyan in the title role alongside Shruti Haasan, Nivetha Thomas, Anjali, Ananya Nagalla and Prakash Raj. Released on 9 April 2021, it is the official Telugu remake of the acclaimed 2016 Hindi film Pink, and it marked Pawan Kalyan’s return to the big screen after a three-year sabbatical. The film opened to packed houses across the Telugu states as an Ugadi festive release and went on to gross around ₹138 crore at the box office.

The film follows three young women implicated in a crime after a night out goes wrong, and the reclusive lawyer who takes up their case. Faithful to the spirit of the original while giving its star the elevation moments his fans expect, it works both as a message-driven courtroom drama and as a star vehicle. It is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Plot

Pallavi (Nivetha Thomas), Zareena (Anjali) and Divya (Ananya Nagalla) are three independent young women sharing a flat in Hyderabad. One evening, at a resort party, they are harassed and assaulted by a group of entitled young men led by Vamsi (Vamsi Krishna), the nephew of a powerful politician. When Pallavi fights back and injures one of them, the tables are turned — the women are accused of attempted murder and solicitation, and the police, pressured from above, build a case against them instead.

Their neighbour, Konidela Satyadev (Pawan Kalyan), is a once-brilliant lawyer who quit practice years ago after a personal tragedy and now lives in near-seclusion with his wife (Shruti Haasan). Moved by the women’s plight, he comes out of retirement to defend them in court. What follows is a tense legal battle against the formidable prosecution lawyer Nanda (Prakash Raj), who tries every trick — character assassination, moral shaming, legal intimidation — to discredit the three women. The courtroom becomes the arena where the film asks its central question: does a woman’s “no” mean no, regardless of who she is, what she wears, or what she was doing that night?

The film keeps the core of Pink intact — the incident, the tightening legal noose, the explosive cross-examinations — while adding Satyadev’s backstory, a romantic flashback, and action set pieces including a fight in the Hyderabad Metro. The second half belongs almost entirely to the courtroom, building to a verdict the audience reaches well before the judge pronounces it.

Performance

Pawan Kalyan plays Satyadev with a restraint that surprised many. Known for his high-voltage screen presence, he dials it down here — the weary lawyer who has given up on the world, jolted back to life by a case he cannot ignore. His courtroom scenes are the film’s high points: measured, cutting, and delivered with real moral authority. When the film does let him loose in the flashback and action blocks, the theatre-eruption moments are intact.

The emotional weight is carried by Nivetha Thomas, Anjali and Ananya Nagalla. Nivetha is outstanding as Pallavi, conveying fear and dignity in equal measure; her breakdown on the witness stand is one of the film’s most affecting scenes. Anjali and Ananya Nagalla hold their own, making the trio feel like real friends rather than plot devices. Prakash Raj is a superb antagonist — polished, ruthless, utterly believable. Shruti Haasan does well in an extended special appearance as Satyadev’s wife, though her role is largely confined to the flashback.

Screenplay and Direction

Venu Sriram had the unenviable job of remaking a modern classic for a star-driven industry, and his solution was to keep the soul of Pink while rebuilding its body for the Telugu mass audience. The courtroom skeleton — the incident, the investigation, the trial — is faithfully retained, and the film is at its best when it trusts that material. The cross-examination scenes crackle with the same moral electricity as the original, and the famous consent argument lands just as powerfully in Telugu.

Where the film stumbles is in the additions. The first half takes its time on Satyadev’s backstory and romance, slowing the narrative and pushing the case into the second hour. The metro action sequence and some political-flavoured dialogues feel engineered for the front-benchers rather than the story, and the adaptation softens some of Pink’s sharp edges. Still, Sriram stages the courtroom confrontations with confidence, P. S. Vinod’s cinematography gives the film a rich, warm look, and the trial sequences stay tight.

Music

S. Thaman’s music serves the film in two registers. The songs — the rousing “Satyameva Jayate” and the romantic “Maguva Maguva” — were popular on release, with “Maguva Maguva” becoming a fan-event favourite. But the background score does the heavier lifting, underlining the courtroom confrontations with swelling themes that push the drama to its peaks. It is effective, if occasionally overbearing.

Visually, the film leans into a classic, slightly old-school aesthetic — wood-panelled courtrooms, warm interiors, and Pawan Kalyan’s sharp black-and-white lawyer’s attire, which became iconic in the film’s posters. The production design by Rajeevan gives the courtroom a lived-in gravity that suits a film about the law.

Themes

At its heart, Vakeel Saab is about consent and the hypocrisy with which society judges women. The film’s most powerful argument — that a woman’s “no” is absolute, no matter her lifestyle, her clothes, or her past — is repeated like a refrain until it becomes impossible to ignore. It also takes aim at victim-blaming, the misuse of power and influence to pervert justice, and the casual moral policing that women face every day.

Layered over this is redemption: Satyadev walked away from the law after it failed him personally, and the case forces him to believe in it again. The film suggests justice is not an abstract system but something fought for person by person, case by case. That this message is delivered by one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars, to an audience that might never watch the original Pink, is arguably the remake’s greatest justification.

Conclusion

Vakeel Saab is a worthy remake that honours its source while giving Pawan Kalyan the comeback his fans waited three years for. The first half meanders and the commercial additions dilute some of the original’s bite, but the courtroom drama at the core is gripping, the performances — especially Nivetha Thomas and Prakash Raj — are excellent, and the message about consent is as urgent as ever. It collected around ₹138 crore worldwide despite its run being cut short by the second COVID-19 wave, and premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 30 April 2021. Essential viewing for Pawan Kalyan fans; a solid, socially conscious courtroom drama for everyone else.
