Plot

4 Idiots is about four friends whose unusual profession is stealing. They are a little foolish, a little desperate and, in their own way, a team, and their lives go on in that pattern until the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown disrupt everything.

With their income gone, the four decide on one final theft to settle down. They target a bungalow rumoured to hold hidden cash, introducing themselves with the bravado of card players, King, Queen, Ash and Jack, and walk straight into a trap. The bungalow belongs to Pulibaba, a dangerous gangster who is using the property for organ harvesting.

What begins as a comedy about petty thieves becomes a locked-house thriller about survival. The four have to escape a place designed to keep them in, and the film’s tension comes from watching small-time crooks face a crime far larger and darker than their own.

Performance

Pugazh leads the film, and his performance is the pleasant surprise. Known for his energetic television persona, he plays the role with restraint, keeping his comedy subtle and controlled, and the calm suits a character who has to think his way out of a trap.

Pragya Nayan makes her Tamil debut as the female lead, and the film gives her character a twist that goes beyond the glamour of the promotional material. Ravi Mariya, Kumki Ashwin, Vincent Ashokan, Indran Elangovan and Thidiyan Thiruselvam complete an ensemble that works best as a bickering, frightened group.

The cast’s chemistry carries the film through its tonal shifts. When the comedy fades and the thriller takes over, the actors’ fear feels real, and that fear is what keeps the second half watchable.

Screenplay and Direction

Sajo Sundar Murugesan writes and directs, co-writing dialogues with Da Vinci Saravanan, and his high-concept setup is genuinely clever. Four lockdown-broke thieves, a bungalow full of black money and a gangster’s trap is a strong engine for a thriller, and the locked-house structure gives the film a contained, escalating shape.

The direction is less sure about tone. The comic energy of the first half evaporates once the organ-harvesting scheme is revealed, and the film never quite decides whether it wants to be funny or frightening. That indecision is its main weakness, though the premise keeps pulling the audience forward.

Murugesan builds his trap well, even if he forgets the comedy inside it. The cinematography by U.K. Senthil Kumar deserves credit too, because making a single house visually interesting for two hours is a real challenge, and he handles it effectively.

Music

Subash Munirathinam composes the music, with lyrics by Kalai Kumar and Divyabharath Ravi. His score is adequate rather than standout, supporting the comedy early on and the tension later without ever taking over the film.

The songs, including the World Class Wine number and Unnaiye Unnaiye, give the film its lighter moments, and AP International’s audio campaign helped the film find an audience ahead of release. The music works as promotion even when it is less memorable inside the film.

In a thriller like this, the score’s job is to stay out of the way of the suspense, and for the most part it does exactly that.

Themes

The film’s sharpest theme is economic desperation. The four thieves are not masterminds, they are men whose incomes were gutted by lockdowns, and the film understands how poverty can make a bad plan look like the only plan.

It is also about the difference between small crime and big crime. The four steal to survive, but the gangster they meet harvests organs for profit, and the film draws a dark line between desperation and exploitation.

Finally, it is about friendship under pressure. The four bicker, boast and blame each other, but when the trap closes, they only have each other, and that bond is the film’s quiet heart.

Conclusion

4 Idiots is a simple, sincere attempt at a full-fledged comedy with a thriller twist. It is uneven, and its tone wobbles, but its premise is strong and Pugazh’s restrained turn gives it a centre worth watching.

For casual viewers who like heist setups with survival stakes, it is a fine streaming choice, now available on Simply South after its 4 September 2026 theatrical release.

What the film understands is that the best thrillers start with ordinary people in over their heads. Four foolish thieves, one locked bungalow and one very dangerous gangster is a recipe with real bite, even when the film itself only partly delivers on it.

4 Idiots is a watchable, uneven genre mashup with a strong premise and a surprisingly restrained lead turn. For fans of Tamil comedy-thrillers and heist stories with a dark twist, it is a solid streaming pick on Simply South.
