Plot

Shabari is a family drama built around a single, stubborn attachment. Rama, played by Samarth Ramesh, has loved one thing above everything else since he was a boy: an old jeep. The jeep came to him through his father, an Ayurvedic therapist who asked for nothing more than that vehicle in return for curing a wealthy man’s bad leg. It is a gift wrapped in a father’s love, and Rama carries it with him long after his parents are gone, through poverty and hardship that would make most people let go.

The story turns when Rama, now grown, sets out to win back the jeep he lost, and his path crosses with Sita, played by Kruthika Gowda, the daughter of the man who took it away. What begins as a plan to recover what is his slowly becomes something else entirely, because on his journey Rama meets a little girl named Shabari, a child who has been kidnapped for ransom and who ends up travelling with him. The jeep, the girl and the man form the heart of the film, and the question of what Rama will protect when he cannot protect everything gives the second half its pull.

Performance

Samarth Ramesh carries a difficult role in his debut as a lead: Rama is not a hero in the usual sense, and the film is honest about that. He is a man whose obsession has made him selfish, and Samarth plays that selfishness without asking the audience to forgive it too quickly. The change in him, from a man chasing a machine to a man guarding a child, is played in small shifts rather than big speeches, and that restraint is what makes the later scenes land.

Kruthika Gowda gives Sita a quiet strength, and her scenes with Samarth have an awkward, real tension, since both characters are hiding what they truly want. The real scene-stealer, though, is young Dhanvi Chinnu as Shabari, whose innocence reframes everything Rama thought he knew about himself. Around them, seasoned performers like M. K. Mata and Ninasam Ashwath give the village world its weight, so the family drama never feels staged.

Screenplay and Direction

Director Orata Shri has said the film is entirely a family drama, and he directs it that way, keeping the camera close to home even when the story turns towards suspense and mystery. The screenplay is built on a simple idea, borrowed from the Ramayana and turned on its head: here Rama is not righteous, Sita is not simply abducted, and Shabari brings no sweet fruit of devotion, only a lost child who forces a flawed man to pay for his past. That reworking gives the film its distinct flavour.

The pacing favours feeling over twists. The first half establishes Rama’s world and his obsession patiently, and the second half, when the kidnapped girl enters his life, raises the stakes without turning the film into a different genre. Some viewers may find the middle stretches crowded, since the film tries to hold poverty, family struggle, action and a kidnapping drama in one frame, but the central thread, a man learning what is worth holding on to, stays clear throughout.

Music

B. R. Hemanth Kumar composes the music, and the songs released through Lahari Music, including Thandani Thaano, gave the film its early momentum before release. The songs are gentle and rooted, matching the rural world of the story rather than fighting it, and they work best in the scenes between Rama and the little girl, where words would only get in the way.

The background score stays modest, letting silences do the emotional work in the film’s tenser moments. It is not a soundtrack that demands attention on its own, and that is a strength here: the music supports the drama instead of announcing it, and the family audience the film is made for will find its melodies easy to carry home.

Themes

At its core, Shabari is about attachment: what happens when the love of a thing outlives the people who gave it to you. Rama’s jeep is not just a vehicle; it is the last thing his father gave him, and his refusal to let it go is really a refusal to let his father go. The film asks whether such devotion is loyalty or a kind of blindness, and it answers that question through the child, who teaches Rama that protection is worth more than possession.

The film also looks at how poverty shapes choices. Rama’s family sold the jeep once to pay for his mother’s cancer treatment, a decision no one in the story judges, and that history keeps the film fair to all its characters. Nobody here is simply good or bad; everyone is trying to hold on to something, and the film’s compassion for that struggle is its most likeable quality.

Conclusion

Shabari is a warm, old-fashioned family drama with a mystery at its edges, and it works best when it trusts its simplest images: a man, a jeep and a child on the road. Samarth Ramesh and Dhanvi Chinnu make an affecting pair, and Orata Shri’s direction keeps the story human even when the plot grows busy.

For viewers who like emotional Kannada family films, Shabari is worth a theatrical watch. Go for the bond between Rama and the little girl at its centre, and stay for a story that asks a gentle but serious question: what do we owe the people we love, and what do we owe the things we cannot let go?
