Sita Ramam is a Telugu period romantic drama directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, starring Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Mandanna, with music by Vishal Chandrasekhar. Released on 5 August 2022 and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema, it unfolded a 1964 love story through a present-day mystery — and became one of the most beloved Telugu films of its decade.

The film currently streams on Prime Video, with the Hindi version on Disney+ Hotstar. Sweeping, old-fashioned and achingly romantic, Sita Ramam reminded audiences what movie love stories could be: patient, mysterious and worth the wait.

Plot

1964. Lieutenant Ram (Dulquer Salmaan), an orphan serving on the border, is loved by his fellow soldiers but known to no family — until letters begin arriving from a mysterious admirer who signs herself Sita Mahalakshmi. Her words, tender and wise and strangely knowing, become the brightest thing in his difficult life, and Ram falls in love with a woman he has never met through the most old-fashioned of media: paper, ink and patience.

Decades later, Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna), a sharp-tongued Pakistani student, is tasked with an unusual mission: deliver a letter from Ram to Sita, in person. Her reluctant journey into the past becomes the film’s frame — and its engine of mystery. Who is Sita Mahalakshmi, really? Why did the letters stop? And what happened on the border in that fateful year? Hanu Raghavapudi parcels out the answers with the patience of a master storyteller, each revelation deepening rather than dispelling the romance.

The film’s final act — as the mystery resolves against the backdrop of war — is devastating in the best way: a love story that turns out to be about sacrifice, identity and the letters we write to the people we cannot keep. Sita Ramam earns its tears the hard way, and its closing passages, as past and present finally converge, are among the most moving in recent Telugu cinema.

Performance

Dulquer Salmaan is magnificent as Lt. Ram — tender, principled, quietly heroic. He plays a soldier who writes like a poet, and his performance finds the exact register the role demands: strength without swagger, romance without sentimentality. It is one of the great romantic performances in recent Indian cinema, all the more impressive for its restraint.

Mrunal Thakur, in her Telugu debut, is a revelation as Sita Mahalakshmi — mysterious, radiant, heartbreaking. She holds the film’s central secret in her eyes for two hours and never once lets it slip, yet makes you feel everything she cannot say. Rashmika Mandanna brings urgency and fire to Afreen, the modern-day catalyst whose own journey mirrors the past she is uncovering. The triangle of performances — past and present, love and duty — is flawless.

Screenplay and Direction

Hanu Raghavapudi’s screenplay is a masterclass in romantic construction. The dual-timeline structure — mystery in the present, love story in the past — could easily have felt mechanical, but the writing makes each timeline deepen the other: Afreen’s investigation gives the romance its stakes, and the romance gives the investigation its soul. The letters themselves are beautifully written, the film’s secret weapon.

Raghavapudi directs with a classicist’s confidence rare in contemporary cinema. The 1960s are recreated with loving detail but never as mere decoration — every period element serves the feeling of a more gracious, more patient world. And his handling of the reveal, when it comes, is perfect: no twist for twist’s sake, but an emotional truth that reframes everything. It is romantic filmmaking of the highest order.

Music

Vishal Chandrasekhar’s score is the film’s beating heart. The songs — steeped in 1960s melody yet entirely contemporary in feeling — became instant classics, the kind of album that plays at weddings and in quiet rooms alike. The music understands the film’s period setting not as costume but as emotion: this is what longing sounded like before it learned to hurry.

The background score is equally fine, carrying the mystery’s tension and the romance’s ache with equal grace. In the letter-reading sequences — the film’s signature passages — the music does something remarkable: it makes paper feel cinematic. Few recent scores have been this essential to their film’s spell.

Themes

Sita Ramam is, on its surface, about a love that crossed borders — and then it reveals itself to be about the borders themselves: between nations, between past and present, between who we are and who we pretend to be. The film’s great theme is identity — Sita’s, Ram’s, Afreen’s — and its suggestion that love is the one force that sees through every disguise to the person underneath.

It is also a quietly profound film about letters in the age of instant messages. Ram and Sita’s romance exists in the space between writing and reading — in waiting, in imagining, in the patience that distance demands. In 2022, that felt like a dispatch from a lost world; the film’s enormous success suggested how many of us were homesick for it.

Conclusion

Sita Ramam is that rare thing: a period romance that is also a gripping mystery, a war film that is really about peace, and a blockbuster built on tenderness rather than noise. Dulquer and Mrunal are luminous, Rashmika brings fire to the frame story, and Hanu Raghavapudi directs with rare romantic conviction. Streaming on Prime Video (and in Hindi on Disney+ Hotstar), it is the love story of its generation — and a film you will carry with you long after the letters are closed.
