Plot

Toss begins in the world of theatre, where applause is thin and money is thinner. Shiva, played by Arjun Kapikad, is the son of a struggling theatre artist, a young man who grew up in the wings of a stage and learned early that life rarely follows a script. He has a habit that defines him: when faced with a difficult choice, he lets a coin toss decide. It is a charming quirk at first, a way of dodging decisions, until life starts making decisions for him that no coin can settle.

The story turns dark when two members of his father’s drama troupe are mysteriously killed. Around that tragedy, other threads tighten: a romance, a family drama, and a hit-and-run case that pulls Shiva into a fight for justice. The film was shot simultaneously in Tulu and Kannada, a bilingual effort that gives it a distinctive coastal flavour. As Shiva digs into the deaths, he discovers that the stage and the real world have more in common than he thought, and that some truths cannot be left to chance.

Performance

Arjun Kapikad, who also directs the film, plays Shiva with an easy, lived-in charm. He understands this character from the inside: the theatre kid, the coin-tosser, the son who loves his father’s art but sees its hardships clearly. His performance keeps Shiva likeable even when the character’s habit of leaving things to chance starts to look like cowardice, and that balance is essential to the film. When Shiva finally stops tossing coins and starts making choices, the shift feels earned.

The supporting cast is a who’s who of coastal Karnataka talent. Sutej Shetty, Devadas Kapikad, Naveen D. Padil, and Aravind Bolar bring the warmth and humour of the theatre world to life, while Bhojaraj Vamanjoor, Garuda Ram, and Balaji Manohar add weight to the darker turns of the story. The mother-son bond at the film’s centre gives the ensemble its emotional anchor, and the cast plays it with genuine feeling rather than melodrama.

Screenplay and Direction

Director Arjun Kapikad, also known as Arjun Dev, juggles a lot in Toss: family drama, romance, mystery, action, and a hit-and-run investigation, all set against the backdrop of a struggling theatre troupe. That the film holds together at all is a credit to his handling of tone. The theatre setting is not decoration; it gives the film its soul, and the contrast between the make-believe of the stage and the very real deaths in the troupe creates a tension that runs through the whole story.

The screenplay uses the coin toss as more than a gimmick. It becomes a way of asking how much of life is choice and how much is chance, and the film returns to that question at every turning point. The bilingual shoot in Tulu and Kannada adds authenticity, grounding the story in the coastal culture it portrays. Some threads are stronger than others, but the central mystery keeps pulling the audience forward, and the emotional core never gets lost in the plot.

Music

Manikanth Kadri composes the music for Toss, and his score reflects the film’s dual identity: part theatre romance, part gritty drama. The songs carry the warmth of the coastal setting and the tenderness of the family story, while the background score tightens around the mystery as Shiva’s investigation deepens. Kadri, a veteran of Kannada cinema, knows how to give a regional story a big emotional sound without overwhelming it.

The music works particularly well in the theatre sequences, where the line between performance and reality blurs. Songs that might feel like stage numbers in another film feel natural here, because these characters actually live on a stage. The score supports the mother-son relationship with gentle, unshowy themes, and it rises to meet the action when the fight for justice demands it. It is a soundtrack that serves the story first, which is exactly right.

Themes

Toss is a film about chance and choice. Shiva’s coin toss habit is funny until it becomes a philosophy: if you never decide, you never have to take responsibility. The film argues, gently but firmly, that this is a luxury a person cannot afford forever. At some point, the coin has to stay in the pocket, and a man has to choose for himself. Shiva’s journey from chance to choice is the film’s real story, and it gives the mystery plot an emotional spine.

The film is also a love letter to theatre and to the artists who keep it alive despite poverty and indifference. Shiva’s father and his troupe represent a vanishing world of stagecraft, and the film honours their dedication without romanticising their hardship. The mother-son bond adds a third theme: the quiet sacrifices that hold a family together when the world offers nothing. Together, these threads make Toss more than a thriller; they make it a film about growing up.

Conclusion

Toss is an engaging, heartfelt drama that blends mystery, romance, and family feeling into a distinctly coastal Kannada package. Arjun Kapikad directs and stars with evident affection for the theatre world he portrays, and the coin-toss premise gives the film a memorable hook. The mystery keeps the audience guessing, and the emotional core keeps them caring.

For viewers who enjoy films where the setting is as important as the story, Toss is well worth a theatrical watch. It is a reminder that sometimes the most interesting films are the ones rooted in a specific place, a specific art form, and a specific family, and that the bravest thing a person can do is finally make a choice.
