Mahanati is a Telugu biographical drama directed by Nag Ashwin, starring Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Vijay Deverakonda. Released on 9 May 2018, it tells the life story of Savitri, the legendary actress who dominated South Indian cinema in the fifties and sixties — the “great actress” of the title. It is that rare biopic that works both as a loving tribute and as an honest, unflinching portrait, and it has grown in stature ever since into one of the most respected Telugu films of the decade.

The film was shot simultaneously in Tamil as Nadigaiyar Thilagam and became a landmark success: it won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu and earned Keerthy Suresh the National Film Award for Best Actress. Made on a modest budget, it grossed around ₹85–90 crore and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Plot

The story is framed in the 1980s. Savitri lies in a coma in a Bangalore hospital, and a young journalist, Madhuravani (Samantha), teams up with photographer Vijay Anthony (Vijay Deverakonda) to write her memoir. Nobody seems to know the real Savitri any more — so the two begin digging, and the film unfolds as her life story, told through their investigation.

We meet Savitri as a girl in Chirala, brought up by her uncle after her father’s death, burning to act. She talks her way into the studios of Madras, faces humiliation and rejection, and slowly claws her way up — from bit roles to superstardom, becoming the highest-paid and most adored actress of her generation. The middle stretch gives us her whirlwind romance and marriage with the already-married actor Gemini Ganesan (Dulquer Salmaan), played here as a charming, weak man who never quite grows up.

Then comes the fall, and the film does not flinch from it: the alcoholism, the financial ruin, the tax raids, the loneliness of a star the industry discarded. What makes it land is the framing device — Madhuravani and Vijay fall for each other as they piece together a woman they never knew, and by the end their romance feels like a mirror of Savitri’s own: love, like fame, is beautiful and dangerous in the same breath.

Performance

Keerthy Suresh gives a career-defining performance as Savitri, and the National Award was richly deserved. She does not do an impression; she recreates the woman’s mannerisms, her mischievous smile, the famous expressive eyes, and — most impressively — the aching vulnerability underneath the stardom. Watching her recreate scenes from Mayabazar and Missamma is genuinely thrilling, but it is the quiet later scenes, where the light has gone out of Savitri’s eyes, that stay with you.

Dulquer Salmaan, in his Telugu debut, is superb as Gemini Ganesan — charming on the surface, selfish and weak underneath, a man you understand even as you dislike him. Samantha anchors the present-day portions with warmth and sincerity, and Vijay Deverakonda brings easy charm as the photographer. The supporting cast is a joy: Rajendra Prasad, Prakash Raj, Mohan Babu and Naga Chaitanya (in a lovely cameo as ANR) fill the golden-era world beautifully.

Screenplay and Direction

Nag Ashwin, who had only made the gentle Yevade Subramanyam before this, directed Mahanati with remarkable confidence. His smartest decision was the dual timeline: the journalist’s investigation gives the biopic momentum and mystery, so it never feels like a wikipedia page with costumes. He moves between the fifties and the eighties seamlessly, and he stages the recreations of classic films — the Mayabazar set, the studio floors — with loving, meticulous detail that clearly came from deep research.

The film’s great strength is its restraint. Ashwin could easily have turned Savitri into a saint, but he shows her flaws — her stubbornness, her terrible judgement about the men in her life, her pride — with real compassion. The pacing dips slightly in the middle stretch, and at nearly three hours it asks for your patience, but the emotional payoff is worth it. The production design and costumes, which also won National Awards, recreate a bygone Madras so convincingly you can almost smell the studio greasepaint.

Music

Mickey J. Meyer’s music is one of the film’s quiet triumphs. The challenge was enormous — compose for a period film about the golden age of cinema without it sounding like pastiche — and he pulls it off beautifully. Songs like “Sada Nannu” and “Mooga Manasulu” feel both vintage and contemporary, and the title track carries real emotional weight. The background score knows exactly when to swell and when to stay silent, which is harder than it sounds.

Visually, the film is a treat. Cinematographer Dani Sanchez-Lopez shifts between the warm, saturated glow of Savitri’s heyday and the colder, emptier frames of her decline, and that visual arc tells the story as eloquently as any dialogue.

Themes

At its heart, Mahanati is about the cruel arithmetic of fame. The film asks an uncomfortable question: what does an industry owe the women it worships and discards? Savitri gave everything — her childhood, her money, her health — to cinema and to the people around her, and when she fell, almost nobody caught her. The film never preaches about this; it simply shows it, and the effect is devastating.

There is also a tender theme about memory and who gets to tell a woman’s story. The whole film is an act of reclamation — a young woman journalist insisting that Savitri’s life be remembered truthfully, flaws and all, rather than as gossip or hagiography. In that sense the film’s title is a statement: she was not just a star, she was Mahanati, the great actress, and history owes her better than it gave her.

Conclusion

Mahanati is a landmark of Telugu cinema — a biopic that honours its subject without flinching from her tragedy, anchored by Keerthy Suresh’s magnificent, award-winning performance and Nag Ashwin’s assured direction. It is moving, beautifully crafted and quietly angry about the way the industry treats its legends. If you care about Indian cinema’s history, this is essential viewing. It streams on Amazon Prime Video.
