Plot

Yeh Prem Mol Liya brings back the most beloved name in Sooraj Barjatya’s cinema: Prem. Ayushmann Khurrana plays Prem for the first time, stepping into a character earlier played by Salman Khan in Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, opposite Sharvari as Purva. The story follows two close friends whose bond slowly turns into love, until a lie creates misunderstandings that put both their relationship and their families to the test.

Set in the world Barjatya knows best, a joint family, weddings, festivals and the rituals that hold people together, the film asks a simple question: can love survive honesty? The songs released so far, the title track, the devotional Garba number Jai Ambe Bol and the celebratory Jhumka Patola, trace the arc of the romance, from festive courtship to the moment everything is at stake, and the film’s heart lies in how Prem and Purva find their way back to each other.

Performance

Ayushmann Khurrana is an inspired choice for the new Prem. His screen persona has always balanced the ordinary and the romantic, and Prem needs exactly that: a man who is decent before he is heroic, and whose charm comes from sincerity rather than swagger. Watching him inside Barjatya’s world, surrounded by weddings and family elders, is one of the film’s most appealing prospects, precisely because it is so different from the edgy, issue-driven roles Khurrana usually plays.

Sharvari, as Purva, gets the film’s other great opportunity: to be a Rajshri heroine for a new generation, dancing in Jhumka Patola alongside Madhuri Dixit in the promotional campaign and holding her own in the family scenes. Around them, Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak, Seema Pahwa and Saumya Tandon give the film its familiar warmth, the kind of ensemble that makes a Barjatya family feel like a real one rather than a backdrop.

Screenplay and Direction

Sooraj Barjatya returns to the director’s chair after Uunchai, and Yeh Prem Mol Liya is a deliberate homecoming: a musical family entertainer in the tradition that made his name, made with Rajshri Productions and Mahaveer Jain Films. The shoot, which began in November 2025 and wrapped by September 2026, included a large-scale musical sequence with around 200 background dancers, and the film’s trailer is set to debut alongside Ramayana during Diwali.

Barjatya’s cinema has always trusted the audience’s patience: long scenes, songs that carry story, and emotions stated plainly rather than hidden. That style can feel old-fashioned, but it is also why his films endure, and Yeh Prem Mol Liya seems designed to test whether a new Prem, played by a very modern star, can carry that tradition forward. The early songs suggest he can, and the film’s success will depend on whether the lie at its centre feels real enough to hurt.

Music

Music is central to this film, as it must be for a Barjatya romance, and Himesh Reshammiya reunites with the director after Prem Ratan Dhan Payo to compose a full album of six songs, with a possible seventh added later. The title track, sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Nihal Tauro with lyrics by Kumaar, is a wedding celebration in the classic Rajshri mould, while Jai Ambe Bol brings devotional energy and Jhumka Patola gives Sharvari a showcase number.

Reshammiya’s melodies have always suited Barjatya’s world, where songs are not interruptions but the story itself, and this album leans into that strength: hummable tunes, traditional arrangements, and lyrics that say what the characters cannot. If the film works, its music will be the reason people hum it on the way home, and the reason it plays at weddings for years afterwards.

Themes

Yeh Prem Mol Liya is about the oldest Barjatya theme of all: that family is not an obstacle to love but its testing ground. Prem and Purva do not fall in love in isolation; they fall in love inside a house full of parents, siblings and rituals, and the lie that separates them matters because it wounds the family as much as the couple. The film argues, gently, that honesty is not just a virtue but a practice, and that love without it cannot hold.

It is also a film about inheritance of a different kind: what it means for Ayushmann Khurrana to inherit the name Prem, and for a new generation to inherit Barjatya’s cinema. The title itself is a promise, that this love, this prem, has been bought at a price, and the film’s job is to show that price being paid, in misunderstandings, in apologies, and finally in the choice to stay.

Conclusion

Yeh Prem Mol Liya releases in cinemas on 27 November 2026, and it arrives as one of the most warmly anticipated family films of the year: a beloved director, a beloved character name, a fresh pairing, and a soundtrack already finding its audience. It will clash with Gunmaaster G9 on the same day, but the two films could hardly be more different, and that is the point: this is the family choice on the menu.

For viewers who grew up on Barjatya’s cinema, and for anyone who believes a love story is better with songs, weddings and a full house watching, Yeh Prem Mol Liya is a film to see with the family. Note: as of this post, the film’s official trailer has not yet been released; it is expected to debut with Ramayana during Diwali, and the songs released so far give the best early taste of the film.
