Sigma is the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay — the son of actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay — who chose to begin his cinema career behind the camera rather than in front of it. Produced by Subaskaran under the Lyca Productions banner and shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, the film is an action-adventure heist comedy headlined by Sundeep Kishan, with Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram and Sampath Raj in key roles. It released worldwide on 2 October 2026, over the Gandhi Jayanti weekend, after two earlier date changes.

The film’s trailer was launched at a grand audio and trailer event in Chennai on 18 September, with filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli associated with the launch — a striking show of support for a first-time director. Certified U/A with a runtime of 146 minutes, Sigma arrived carrying enormous curiosity: could the star’s son, trained in film production and screenwriting abroad, deliver a heist film with genuine craft rather than mere lineage? The answer, judging by the mixed but lively reception, is complicated — and interesting.

Plot

Guru, played by Sundeep Kishan, runs a modest home library and lives a small, honest life — except that he is desperate to clear his father’s debts. When he stumbles upon a drugs racket, he sees not a crime to report but an opportunity to exploit: he tries to use what he knows to make money, and in doing so walks straight into the path of the smuggler Veerayya Reddy, played by Sampath Raj. What begins as a desperate scheme snowballs into something far larger — a treasure hunt and a high-stakes heist, with a massive racket involving drugs and gambling, worth hundreds of crores, sitting at the centre of it all.

Guru assembles his crew — his close friends and the radio jockey he loves — and plans an audacious operation against Reddy’s empire. But the heist, as heists always do, refuses to go according to plan. Betrayal cuts through the team, alliances shift, and Guru finds himself fighting not just for the money but to reclaim what was taken from him. The film moves across Chennai, Salem, the Thalakona forests and Thailand, piling traps, double-crosses and narrow escapes onto its hero with cheerful abandon.

Without spoiling the endgame, Sigma keeps its cards close: the trailer deliberately reveals that Guru has been betrayed but refuses to show how — or by whom — he fights back. The pleasure of the film lies less in the destination than in the machinery of the con, the comedy of errors among the crew, and the question of whether a fundamentally decent man can outwit people far more ruthless than himself.

Performance

Sundeep Kishan carries Sigma, and the critical response has been near-unanimous on this point: his performance is the film’s strongest asset. He plays Guru with an easy, lived-in charm — the body language of a man who is always thinking two steps ahead, the comic timing of someone who knows he is in over his head. The action sequences give him room to show a physicality that his recent roles haven’t always demanded, and he handles the film’s tonal shifts — from heist tension to romance to slapstick — without visible strain.

Faria Abdullah brings warmth and spark to the female lead, and her chemistry with Sundeep gives the romantic track genuine lift. Sampath Raj is convincingly menacing as Veerayya Reddy, the kind of antagonist who doesn’t need to raise his voice to fill a room. Raju Sundaram supplies much of the humour, while Shiv Panditt, Anbu Thasan, Yog Japee and Sheela Rajkumar round out an ensemble that keeps the film’s lighter passages moving. It is a cast chosen for energy as much as for star value, and it shows.

Screenplay and Direction

Jason Sanjay’s backstory is part of the film’s fascination. He has spoken about turning down an acting offer from Malayalam filmmaker Alphonse Puthren when he was around twenty, having already decided that direction was his calling. That deliberateness shows in Sigma’s craft: the film is technically assured for a debut — cinematographer Krishnan Vasant gives the heist sequences a slick, big-canvas feel, Praveen K. L.’s editing keeps the cons crisp, and the action choreography by Venkat and Silva has genuine punch.

Where the film divides opinion is the writing. Reviewers who enjoyed Sigma praised its humour, its technical polish and its leading man; those who didn’t found the narrative predictable, the twists telegraphed, the emotional beats familiar. It is the classic debut-director tension — all the craft, not yet all the surprise. Still, there is enough invention in the heist mechanics and enough confidence in the staging to suggest that Jason Sanjay is a filmmaker to watch, whatever one thinks of this particular screenplay.

Music

Thaman S composes the score and soundtrack, and his music is woven tightly into the film’s commercial fabric. The romantic track ‘Sulochana’ — with lyrics by Super Subu — drew attention as the Tamil singing debut of Saanvi Sudeep, and its breezy, youthful sound has found a steady audience. A special song filmed on a grand scale with Catherine Tresa alongside Sundeep Kishan adds to the album’s spectacle quotient.

The background score does the expected Thaman job: propulsive during the heists, playful during the comedy, swelling at the emotional turns. It is functional, energetic music for a functional, energetic film — it may not reinvent the composer’s sound, but it keeps Sigma’s considerable runtime moving at the pace a heist comedy needs.

Themes

Sigma is, at heart, a film about debt — not just the money Guru’s father owes, but the debts of loyalty, betrayal and pride that accumulate around every character. Guru’s journey from honest librarian to heist planner asks an old question in new clothes: how far can a good man bend before he breaks? The film’s answer is cheerfully commercial — bend far, break nothing, learn something — but the question gives the comedy its spine. Around it circle the genre’s eternal concerns: trust as currency, greed as a trap, and the idea that the cleverest plan is only as good as the people executing it.

Conclusion

Sigma is an entertaining, technically polished debut that announces Jason Sanjay as a director with real commercial instincts, even if the screenplay doesn’t always match the craft. Sundeep Kishan is excellent, the heist mechanics are fun, and the humour lands more often than not. Viewers looking for a slick, light-hearted action-adventure with a charming lead will find plenty to enjoy — and those curious about the next generation of Tamil filmmakers will want to see where its director goes next. Streaming on Netflix soon; worth a watch.
