Arjun Reddy is a Telugu romantic drama written and directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey. Released on 25 August 2017, it was a genuine bolt from the blue — a small film made for around ₹5 crore that tore up the rulebook of the Telugu love story and became a cultural flashpoint. It follows Arjun Reddy Deshmukh, a brilliant but volatile young surgeon whose anger issues and self-destructiveness consume him after he loses the woman he loves.

The film was both a box-office triumph, grossing about ₹51 crore worldwide, and one of the most argued-over films of its decade — praised for its raw honesty, criticised for glorifying its hero’s behaviour. Vijay Deverakonda won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Telugu), and the film was later remade in Hindi as Kabir Singh. It is now streaming on Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar.

Plot

Arjun Reddy Deshmukh is a house surgeon at a medical college in Mangalore — academically brilliant, surgically gifted, and utterly uncontrollable. His temper is legendary on campus, and the only person who can reach him is his easygoing best friend Shiva. Everything changes when Arjun lays eyes on Preethi Shetty, a quiet first-year student. His pursuit of her is intense and possessive from the start, but she gradually reciprocates, and the two begin a passionate relationship that survives his graduation and his move away for higher studies.

The relationship shatters when Preethi’s father discovers them and, disapproving of Arjun’s temperament and background, forces her into an arranged marriage. Arjun’s reaction is catastrophic — a spiral of alcohol, drugs and reckless behaviour that costs him his family, nearly costs him his medical licence, and turns him into a hollowed-out version of himself. A brief, transactional fling with a film star, Jia Sharma, only underlines how completely he is still anchored to Preethi.

Rock bottom finally forces a reckoning. After losing his licence and hitting his lowest point, Arjun begins the slow climb back — reconciling with his father, getting clean, and rebuilding his life. A chance encounter with Preethi, now pregnant and living apart from her husband, reveals that the child is his. The film closes with the two reuniting, choosing each other with open eyes this time.

Performance

Vijay Deverakonda gives the performance of a lifetime — feral, wounded and completely without vanity. He plays Arjun’s brilliance and his ugliness with the same conviction, and the famous stretches of the film where Arjun is barely holding himself together are almost unbearably raw. It is easy to see why this role made him a star overnight: he doesn’t act the self-destruction, he seems to exhale it. The Filmfare Best Actor award was richly deserved.

Shalini Pandey, a newcomer, holds her own beautifully as Preethi — quiet where he is loud, and the film is smart enough to let her silence speak. Rahul Ramakrishna is a delight as Shiva, Arjun’s loyal friend, bringing much-needed warmth and humour, while the supporting cast, including Kanchana as Arjun’s grandmother, grounds the film’s wilder stretches in something real.

Screenplay and Direction

For a debut, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s direction is astonishingly assured. He shoots the film in long, unhurried takes that let scenes breathe and performances build, and he refuses to sand down his protagonist’s edges — Arjun is allowed to be unlikeable, which is precisely what makes him feel real. The first half, charting the college romance, has an energy and specificity that Telugu cinema hadn’t seen, and the intermission stretch is genuinely shattering.

The film is over three hours long, and it does indulge itself — some will find the second half’s wallowing excessive. But Vanga, who drew partly on his own days as a physiotherapy student, writes the medical-college world with rare authenticity, and his control of tone is remarkable: the film is funny, romantic, horrifying and tender by turns, sometimes within a single scene. Produced by his brother Pranay Reddy Vanga under Bhadrakali Pictures, it was a true homegrown gamble that paid off beyond anyone’s imagination.

Music

Radhan’s soundtrack was a phenomenon in its own right — songs like “Madhurame,” “Teliseney Na Nuvvey” and “Dhooram” became the defining romantic playlist of 2017, playing at every college fest and café for years. The music captures the film’s ache perfectly: tender without being soft, melancholic without being maudlin. Harshavardhan Rameshwar’s background score is equally vital, humming underneath Arjun’s lowest moments with a quiet dread.

Raj Thota’s cinematography deserves special mention — intimate and handheld when it needs to be, letting you sit uncomfortably close to Arjun’s unraveling, and finding real beauty in the coastal Mangalore setting. The film looks like an indie but hits like a mainstream juggernaut.

Themes

Arjun Reddy is, at its core, a film about the thin line between passion and poison. Arjun’s love for Preethi is genuine, but his possessiveness curdles it into something destructive — and the film’s refusal to either condemn or celebrate him outright is what made it so divisive. It is also a story about masculinity in crisis: a man raised to be brilliant and entitled, with no tools for handling loss, who has to be broken completely before he can rebuild himself.

Running underneath is a quieter theme of redemption — the idea that a person is not the worst thing they have done, and that change, while agonisingly slow, is possible. The film’s ending, with its hard-won calm, lands precisely because the journey there was so ugly.

Conclusion

Arjun Reddy remains one of the most important Telugu films of the last decade — not because it is flawless, but because it dared to be uncomfortable. Sandeep Reddy Vanga announced himself as a filmmaker unwilling to play safe, Vijay Deverakonda delivered a career-defining performance, and the film’s raw, take-no-prisoners honesty changed what a Telugu romance was allowed to be. Love it or argue with it, you won’t forget it.
