Plot

Moonwalk is a musical fantasy comedy built around Babootty, a young film choreographer played by Prabhu Deva, whose life revolves around dance, music and entertainment. Babootty’s world is colourful, noisy and full of movement, and the film treats that world as a celebration in itself.

The story adds a delicious meta twist: A.R. Rahman makes his acting debut as an angry young film director, a fictional version of himself, who crosses paths with Babootty’s world. What began as a brief appearance in the song Mayile grew into a full role after director Manoj NS noticed Rahman’s natural charisma on set.

Around them, Yogi Babu appears in an astonishing sixteen different roles, and the film follows Babootty through friendship, comedy and dance-driven chaos toward a festive, feel-good finish. It is a family entertainer in the fullest sense, built to make theatres the happiest place for families for two and a half hours.

Performance

Prabhu Deva leads the film as Babootty, and the role plays to everything he does best: dance, comedy and warmth. His rehearsal stories alone, fifteen days for Yethu and Macarena, thirty days for Mayile, show how seriously he takes the film’s dancing, and that dedication shows on screen.

A.R. Rahman’s acting debut is the film’s great curiosity. He plays a director who is playful and experimental, and the novelty of watching the composer face the camera adds a layer of fun that no other Diwali film can offer.

Yogi Babu’s sixteen roles are a comic feat in themselves, and Aju Varghese, Arjun Ashokan, Satz, Nishma Chengappa, Redin Kingsley and Mottai Rajendran give the film a lively ensemble. The cast is built for laughter, and it looks like it is having a wonderful time.

Screenplay and Direction

Manoj NS, founder and CEO of Behindwoods, writes and directs in his directorial debut, and he produces the film with Divya Manoj and Praveen Elak under Behindwoods Productions. His idea is simple and appealing: make theatres happy, with Rahman’s music and Prabhu Deva’s dance doing the heavy lifting.

The film is releasing in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, and it was the first Tamil film to reserve the Diwali 2026 slot. Manoj’s direction favours energy and colour over complexity, which is the right approach for a musical comedy about a choreographer.

The film’s VFX worlds for the songs Mayile and Jiger, and its choreography by Sekhar VJ, Piyush Chazia and Sandy, show a production that has thought hard about how its musical numbers should look. This is a film that wants its songs to be events, not interruptions.

Music

A.R. Rahman composes all five songs and, in a historic first, sings every one of them himself. The album is built around happiness, with each song celebrating a different flavour of joy: Yethu for happiness, Macarena for friendship, Mayile for hard work, Tinga for love and Jiger for life.

The reunion itself is the story. Prabhu Deva and Rahman last worked together on films like Kaadhalan, Love Birds and Minsara Kanavu, and their return after nearly twenty-five years has already made the soundtrack one of the year’s most anticipated.

Songs like Tinga, Macarena and the anthem Storm have already introduced audiences to the film’s sound, and Lahari Music’s backing gives the album a strong launch. For a dance film, the music is not just accompaniment, it is the main event, and Rahman treats it that way.

Themes

Moonwalk is, above all, about happiness as a choice. Its songs celebrate joy in its different forms, and the film suggests that dance, friendship and hard work are all ways of practising happiness.

It is also about reunion, both on screen and off. Prabhu Deva and Rahman reuniting after decades mirrors the film’s own story about people coming back together through music, and that parallel gives the film a warm, nostalgic glow.

Finally, it is about the joy of performance itself. Babootty’s life as a choreographer is a love letter to cinema’s dancers, musicians and dreamers, and the film celebrates the people who make movies move.

Conclusion

Moonwalk is a bright, musical Diwali entertainer with a legendary pairing at its heart and a cast that looks delighted to be there. It is not trying to be serious cinema, it is trying to be a celebration, and on that measure it looks like a success.

For families, dance lovers and anyone who grew up on the Prabhu Deva and Rahman combination, it is an essential theatrical watch when it arrives on 6 November 2026.

What the film understands is that some reunions are worth waiting twenty-five years for. When the music starts and Prabhu Deva begins to dance, the audience is not just watching a film, it is welcoming back an old, happy feeling.

Moonwalk is a joyful, dance-filled reunion of two legends, made for families and for the festive season. Prabhu Deva’s dancing, A.R. Rahman’s music and a delightfully unusual cast make it one of Diwali’s happiest theatrical bets.
