Plot

Khela is a family drama built around the most powerful bond in any family: the bond between a mother and her child. Vihaan Prabhanjan plays the hero, a young man whose life is shaped by everyday household dynamics, friendship and affection, and the film follows him as he learns, sometimes painfully, what his mother has carried for him all along.

Director-producer Bharath VJ has said that although Vihaan is the hero, the real hero is Swathi, who plays the mother, and the film is structured to prove him right. The story moves through the small, recognisable moments of family life, a mother’s worry, a son’s impatience, a household holding together, and lets its emotion build from those moments rather than from grand twists.

The drama deepens as the hero begins to notice what he has been missing. Small scenes, a meal served without comment, a worry hidden behind a smile, a sacrifice mentioned only in passing, accumulate until the audience sees the mother’s life whole. The film’s patience in building that picture is its greatest strength, because when the hero finally understands, the audience understands with him, and the emotion feels shared rather than instructed.

Performance

Vihaan Prabhanjan, known from television serials, steps into a film lead with an easy, likeable presence. He plays the hero’s journey from taking his mother’s love for granted to understanding its weight, and the change is gradual and believable rather than announced.

Swathi Gurudutt is the film’s heart. Her performance as the mother is lived-in and unshowy, and the scenes where she carries the family’s burdens without complaint are the ones audiences will remember. Ashika Rao makes an assured debut as the heroine, and Sangeetha Bhat and Yuvaraj Gowda give the supporting cast its warmth and humour.

Screenplay and Direction

Bharath VJ writes, directs and produces, and his direction keeps the film close to home. The screenplay trusts the audience to recognise its own families in the story, and it resists the temptation to inflate a domestic drama into something louder than it needs to be.

The trailer launch itself told the film’s story in miniature: it was unveiled by the mothers of the cast and crew, a fitting start for a film about maternal love. That sincerity runs through the direction, which favours honest emotion over melodrama, even in its most affecting scenes.

The screenplay’s domestic focus also gives the supporting characters room to breathe. Sangeetha Bhat and Yuvaraj Gowda are not there only to advance the hero’s story; they have their own household rhythms and affections, and those details make the film’s world feel like a real neighbourhood. A family drama lives or dies by that sense of reality, and Khela earns it.

Music

M. S. Thyagaraj composes the music, and the songs released through Anand Audio, including the Amma track, have been central to the film’s reception. The mother’s song in particular has found an audience, and it is easy to hear why: it says plainly what the film shows, that a mother’s endurance is the quiet engine of a family.

The background score stays gentle, supporting the domestic scenes without pushing them towards sentimentality. Thyagaraj’s music understands the film’s scale: this is a story about a home, and the score sounds like it belongs inside one.

Themes

The theme of Khela is motherhood, and the film treats it not as a slogan but as daily labour. Swathi’s character endures, sacrifices and forgives, and the film asks the current generation, in the director’s own framing, to look again at what a mother endures for her children.

The film also looks at gratitude: the moment a child realises that love is not automatic but given, day after day, by someone who asks for little in return. That realisation, rather than any twist, is the film’s climax, and it is a brave choice for a commercial drama.

There is a further, quieter idea in the film: that gratitude is a practice, not a single apology. The hero does not fix years of taking his mother for granted with one speech; he learns, slowly, to notice, to help, and to stay present. The film suggests that love in a family is proved in small daily acts, and that suggestion, plain as it sounds, is what audiences carry out of the cinema.

Conclusion

Khela is a sincere, heartfelt family drama that knows exactly what it is about: a mother, a son, and the love that holds a household together. Swathi Gurudutt’s performance alone makes it worth seeing.

For a family outing with genuine feeling, it is worth a theatrical watch. Go with your mother if you can, and stay for a film that may make you call her on the way home.
