RRR is a Telugu epic action drama directed by S. S. Rajamouli, starring Ram Charan, N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn. Released on 25 March 2022, it imagines a friendship between two real-life freedom fighters — Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem — who never met in history. What Rajamouli does with that “what if” is nothing short of extraordinary: three hours of pure, sincere, large-hearted cinema that conquered not just India but the world.

The film grossed around ₹1,200 crore worldwide, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu,” and became a global word-of-mouth phenomenon. It is streaming on ZEE5 in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, and on Netflix in Hindi.

Plot

British India, 1920. In the forests of Adilabad, a young Gond girl is taken by the British. Her protector, the tribal leader Komaram Bheem, journeys to Delhi to bring her home. Meanwhile, Alluri Sitarama Raju, a steely officer in the British police, is ordered to hunt Bheem down. The two men meet by chance — neither knowing the other’s true identity — and become inseparable friends after a spectacular rescue involving a train crash, fire and water.

But their bond is built on a fault line. Raju is secretly working against the British from within, playing a dangerous double game, while Bheem’s mission puts him on a collision course with Raju’s duty. When the truth erupts, the friendship is tested brutally. The second half moves through betrayal, imprisonment and suffering toward a reunion — and then an all-out assault on the British establishment, with Raju wielding fire and Bheem commanding water, side by side.

A note on history: the real Raju and Bheem lived in different regions and never met. The film is upfront about being a fiction, a myth rather than a documentary — and that freedom is precisely what makes it soar.

Performance

Ram Charan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr. are the twin engines of the film, and both are phenomenal. Charan plays Raju with coiled intensity, a man carrying a secret that eats at him — his breakdown in the second half is genuinely shattering. Jr. NTR is all heart as Bheem: innocent, physical, emotionally open. He makes you love the character within minutes. Together, their chemistry is the film’s greatest special effect, the thing no amount of money can manufacture.

Alia Bhatt brings warmth to Sita in her limited screen time, and Ajay Devgn lends weight to the flashback portions in an extended cameo. Ray Stevenson and Alison Doody are deliciously villainous as the British governor and his wife — old-school antagonists for an old-school epic.

Screenplay and Direction

S. S. Rajamouli operates on a level few directors in world cinema can touch. His action staging is a masterclass because every set piece is built around character emotion, not spectacle for its own sake. The interval sequence, the bridge rescue, the prison break — each tops the last, and each lands because we care desperately about the two men at the centre. He understands something fundamental: audiences do not cheer for CGI, they cheer for characters they love doing impossible things.

The screenplay, written with his father K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, is classically constructed — friendship, betrayal, redemption — and executed with total conviction. There is not a cynical frame in the film. That sincerity, played at maximum volume, is what disarmed sceptics worldwide.

Music

M. M. Keeravani’s music became a global phenomenon. “Naatu Naatu,” the irrepressible dance number, won the Oscar — the first Indian feature film song to do so — and its hook step was performed by everyone from K-pop stars to Hollywood actors. But the whole score is superb: the rousing “Dosti” theme, the heartbreaking background music in the film’s darkest stretch. The sound design is thunderous; this is a film you feel in your chest as much as see with your eyes.

Cinematographer K. K. Senthil Kumar gives the film its painterly grandeur — the fire-and-water visual motif runs through every frame, and the period recreation is immersive without ever feeling like a museum piece.

Themes

RRR is, at heart, about friendship — the kind of bond the film treats with religious seriousness. It is also about colonialism and resistance, though it approaches these through myth rather than lecture. The deeper theme is sacrifice: what each man gives up for the other, and for the cause. The film suggests that love between friends can be as profound and world-changing as any romance, and it makes the case with total emotional commitment.

Conclusion

RRR is a once-in-a-generation spectacle — big-hearted, technically dazzling and emotionally overwhelming. Rajamouli delivers the definitive bromance epic, powered by two towering lead performances and music that conquered the Oscars. It proved that Indian mainstream cinema could win over the world entirely on its own terms, without diluting anything. If you have not seen it yet, fix that immediately. Some films you watch; this one you surrender to.
